rationale

Rationale

After our initial research we decided to each come up with 4 concepts each. We then developed two of our concepts. After some discussion we decided to combine our favorite ideas together because we felt that the different aspects that we liked about each idea works well together. So after we had our concept which was to have a girl and two teddy bears walking through a forest with hanging doors, we decided to do some concept design. From listening to the song we got the impression that the general mood of the concept should be like an adventure time type mood. We wanted to create a childish feeling as our targeted audience is children and young teenagers. Because of this, we have tried to keep our characters simple and clean with block colours. We decided to take literal interpretation from the song and created our main character out of that. There was a line within the song that stated “who came knocking on the door, a little girl with a long white gown” so our main character is a little girl with a white gown. We also thought that she could be accommodated by two sidekick type characters. We decided to have them as teddy bears because we felt that they would appeal to the children and they could be turned into merchandise that could be used to further promote the song. We have created the animation as a type of advert that lead to the website. This is because we thought that it could be used as a starting point to get people interested in our song. We wanted to keep a certain aesthetic through the entire project. Our aesthetic is a 2D animated character with the same type of background contrasted by a photo realistic door to create a jarring effect.

*ended up changing our font to copperplate as it fit our aesthetic better.

Further developments on concepts

After the 8 initial concepts we then each took 2 of our ideas and developed it a bit more and tried to change aspects of it to see how it would work.
Anna's idea 2  " child walking around the castle, opening doors"

Anna's idea 3-" goddess and spirits dancing in the sky"

Character Mood Boards

In the end we decided to go against the idea of having the old man in the animation and instead opted for just an outline. The reason for this is that we wanted to have a mystery factor in the animation so that the audience will have more reason to go onto the website and to investigate about the project

Info on Blerta's Come Dance Aroud the World

Blerta "Bruno Lawrence's Electric Revelation and Travelling Apparition" was a 70's (71-75) traveling musical and theatrical group. The group traveled around in a red grafitied bus.  Bruno Lawrence's arranged the group of musician's, actors and friends to get away from modern performing life. Most of the group lived together on a commune. The group were labeled as hippies and looked down upon for this by others in the music industry.

The red graffitied bus is a motive the group have used in album art and the Come Dance Around the World Music Video.

Blerta wrote the children's song to combat the fact that they were viewed in a negative way when rolling into towns in a red graffitied bus. The song was written for public relation shows called The Blerta Kids' Show which was a free show they put on in every town they visited.

"The theory was that it is difficult for anyone to maintain hostility towards people who are good to their kids and prepared to entertain them for nothing. This proved to be the case and we persisted with these popular free shows for some years."

The idea for the song came from the children's author Margret Mayhe's book of the same name.

A music video features children running/waling around in various forms of dress up  and a 70's animation of the red bus driving along the a road with wide open scenery was published later for the song. It featured footage from the Blerta documentary.

 Chorus Lyrics:

Dance all around the world
(dance all around the wold with me)
Dance with the birds and the music

 (Monologue)
And so they danced until they came to a castle on a lonely hill
